Strange loop playback behaviour in Morgana Demo v1 2 3
« on: May 18, 2008, 03:49:28 PM »
Currently testing the v1 2 3 Demo.
What I did:
Created a zone, load a wav loop via the browser in the zone, engaged the loop button, adjusted the loop end to make the loop shorter (originally the loop is longer), pressed the corresponding key on the Morgana Gui to play back the loop. Recorded the output live into Reaper.

Here's the result:

Sounds like two loops playing at once further drifting apart...

Anyone can reproduce this or any ideas?

My setup:
Reaper v2.206
AMD 64 X2
Win 2000 SP 4

Ah, that's an easy one--and intended behavior, in fact.

Morgana's default setup has two oscillators playing at the same time, one tuned slightly lower than the other.  Since the loop is pretty long, that slight tuning difference makes the loops drift apart after a while.

Three possible ways to change this:

  • set OscMix to minimum or maxium (effectively muting one of the oscillators), OR
  • enable Mix Mode, which allows you to load separate samples for the two oscillators (simply leave one empty), OR
  • set Detune to 0, which makes the oscillators not drift apart.

Take care & nice loop BTW!

Thanks for quick reply.

Ok, now I get that.

Just out of curiosity:

If that's Morgana's intended behaviour (two osc's playing at once slightly detuned) that means I always get a slight phaser effect when playing back (even short) samples.

To be honest I really don't quite get it for what this is good for.
Did old hardware samplers behave the same? (never owned any).

Btw the loop is the (quite famous) "Apache"

Yes, this is one of the ideosyncracies of the Ensoniq Mirage (that provided much of the inspiration for Morgana) that we happened to like.  In combination with its lofi-ness this (IMHO of course) works really well on a lot of source material--and you can always switch it off if desired.

Thanks for the Apache link!
